Resin Bound Paving Provides Endless Design Opportunities

Resin bound paving not only delivers a beautiful and durable surface, but also provides architects, designers and home owners with great design flexibility.

As the leading manufacturers of resin bound paving we offer an extremely wide colour palette to select from, as well as an enormous selection of aggregates which combine to provide almost limitless design possibilities.  From vibrant shades of red and blue to the more mellow hues of natural golden brown and subtle grey, resin bound paving can provide the answer to almost any design challenge.

This wide range of colours and textures allows schemes either to blend in with surrounding materials  or to provide a sharp contrast – the final solution depending on the creative vision of the designer. Resin bound paving has proved to be the perfect design solution for an extensive range of projects across the world.  From schools, medical centres, bridges and hospitals, to private homes and pedestrianised areas, the product has brought life and colour to landscape schemes of all shape, size and complexity.

For commercial applications, our resin bound paving systems also gives designers the opportunity to create intricate and detailed designs within the surface.  Whether this be a corporate logo, a welcome message to visitors or a school emblem, the material can be used to create a perfect, colour-matched representation of virtually any subject, providing a unique design signature to any project.

SureSet are also able to offer solutions for both exterior and interior applications – allowing designers to continue their design theme from the outside right through to the inside of a building. By applying a colourless sealant, the resin bound flooring can also be used in areas that require a completely water resistant solution.

Performance though is not sacrificed for the sake of design.  Whether used internally or externally, resin bound paving provides a beautiful and hard wearing surface which will give many years service and which requires virtually no maintenance.  Resistant to cracks, oil, UV-light and frost damage, the integrity of the resin bound surface remains intact, preventing stones from becoming loose and weeds from growing through.

We offer technical and design advice and if required, can produce specific colours to match particular project requirements.

For larger more intricate areas, we have our own professional, skilled installation teams.  However for smaller areas some also offer DIY kits which contain everything needed to complete a perfect job.  Contact us directly and discuss how SureSet resin bound paving can be used in your project. Regeneration Project – Tickle Cock Bridge

During the summer SureSet was involved in a regeneration project in Castleford, Yorkshire. The project was aimed to rejuvenate and enliven an underpass called Tickle Cock Bridge which has been the subject of much attention throughout the years.

The Victorian structure, originally built in 1890, has been the focus of a number of regeneration schemes in recent times. In 2005, one scheme was the subject of controversy when it was replaced by a prefabricated concrete tunnel and then renamed ‘Tittle Cott Bridge’. Wakefield council then reversed the decision after residents of Castleford protested against the politically correct alternative to the traditional risqué name for the Victorian landmark.

In 2008 further improvements were made with the introduction of an angular concrete seating feature and to symbolise the areas colourful history the walls were lined with a tactile red flock material mounted on an aluminium honeycomb structure seen below.

This red cladding however did not keep its colour particularly well and after a while became prone to vandalism and graffiti.  In 2010 Wakefield Council commissioned NPS North East Limited to develop proposals for regeneration that would reflect the history of Castleford, be attractive and include the local community.

Consideration was given to a number of potential systems including using laminate panels and perforated aluminium panels. Instead it was decided that the most effective method to achieve the desired effect would be to include resin bound recycled glass aggregates set within bespoke metal trays that clad the walls and seating feature. The use of glass is particularly relevant since in the 19th century Castleford was one of the largest glass manufacturing towns in Britain, producing 20,000,000 glass bottles and jars a year.

SureSet was chosen to supply the resin bound materials which were to be used in the design, however when we learned of how the community would be getting involved we offered to oversee the use of our products. Three events hosted at the Bridge Arts Centre saw pupils from St Josephs and Smawthorne Henry Moore Primary Schools design and then create approximately 60 fish with our colourful glass aggregates.

Jacqui Anslow (above-centre) of SureSet UK Ltd went along to help the pupils and the organisers properly apply the SureSet to the preformed ‘fish’ shapes. We would also like to acknowledge the role of our Approved Installer RP Harrison Ltd for their help in overseeing the community involvement sessions and the further application of the SureSet to the metal trays as seen below. In total six colours from our Spectrum and Recycled Glass ranges were used for the project including 3mm Pure Orange, 3mm Mint Green, 3mm Water Blue, 3mm Pastel Blue, 3mm Traffic Red and 3mm Pacific Blue.

These aggregates were mixed with our resin, applied to the metal trays and left to cure. Once cured the trays could then be fixed to the walls and seating area. This is just one example of the artistic value of SureSet resin bound paving. With some creative thinking and the proper application of skill, the potential for creativity is infinite. Whether you utilize our unrivalled installation expertise or if you wish to create your own work of art using our DIY kits SureSet resin bound paving can bring any design to life.

Commenting on SureSets and her own involvement in the project Jacqui Anslow stated that “Initially it was great to learn that from all of the proposed designs and products available to the Council they chose SureSet, but it was even more exciting for us to be involved with the community project.  Working hands on with the children was inspiring and fun and they all seemed to really enjoy the activities.  I’ve got a good feeling we may even see some budding young designers develop from this experience. I am really happy to have been involved in such a worthwhile project and am glad that the area looks so great with our product at the heart of it”.

Reflection of 2011

2011 has been a busy year for SureSet.  From laying thousands of metres of high quality resin bound paving to appointing new agents across the globe, 2011 has been a year of moving forward for SureSet.  This post is simply a recap of what the folk at SureSet have been up to throughout the year as we head into 2012.

Throughout the year we exhibited at a number of high profile exhibitions. These were including the Surface Design Show at the London Business Design centre in February, and we also exhibited at the Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the NEC Birmingham in March.  Next was the Landscape show in April followed by BBC Gardeners World Live which we exhibited at for the first time in June.  We then rounded off the year by exhibiting at the popular Grand Designs Live exhibition in October. Each of these exhibitions gave us a chance to build new connections in the industry and create a number of quality leads, but more importantly they allowed us to inform people and demonstrate our products in a way that isn’t quite possible over the phone, through email or by using any of the other media platforms we use to communicate with people.  SureSet would like to thank everyone who came to see us at any of these exhibitions.  We hope it was informative and enjoyable and we look forward to seeing you all at shows throughout 2012.

The exhibitions were also a platform for us to announce the new exciting additions to our product range.  Earlier in the year we launched PermaPlant, which is the innovative surfacing product for pot plants and planters.  PermaPlant was designed to reduce a plant pots need for maintenance and increase its safety around children and pets, however it also gives the customer the power to create a unique and striking effect to compliment the plant.  Follow the link to learn more about PermaPlant www.sureset.co.uk/permaplant.

Fusion the new surfacing product which gives customers the power to create their own perfect colour combination was also launched this year. Fusion was created to give architects, designers and homeowners even more freedom when selecting their ideal surfacing material. The range draws together products from the SureSets existing Spectrum and Natural Aggregate ranges to provide a virtually limitless selection of colour combinations to choose from. Follow the link to learn more about Fusion www.sureset.co.uk/fusion.

2011 was also a year of developing new channels to communicate with potential and existing customers for SureSet.  The first action we took was to enhance our online presence by launching our new website back in February.  On top of this we now have company profiles on Facebook, Twitter and Linked In. We have also developed a short visual presentation which is available on YouTube and is aimed to give people a visual insight into the potential of our resin bound paving solutions. We have also developed a blog which we hope is enjoyable to read and is giving valuable information about our products and the company.

During the course of the year we have also developed some new literature which is available for anyone who wishes to learn more about our products.  Our latest brochures are available for domestic, commercial and international customers and can be requested from our website.  We have also released a number of technical articles which we have devised in order to clear up some of the confusion which still surrounds resin bound paving.  These articles are accessible at a number of online article databases and are also posted on our blog.  On top of this we have made our comprehensive CPD presentation available on disk with full recorded commentary.  This was done so that it is possible for anyone to benefit from our detailed CPD presentation in the comfort of their own home or business at a time to suit them.

2011 was also a year for increasing the areas SureSet operate in.  We have appointed several new Approved Installers throughout the course of the year so wherever your project is in the UK SureSet are able to come and install our solutions without fail. We have also appointed new Agents who are able to install our products in Ghana, UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Our new Agents Temako Engineering Limited and Tanseeq LLC were appointed because they share SureSets values of quality, technical support and customer service and we are proud to have them operating on our behalf.

This year SureSet have continued to lead the market with quality and this is represented by the increase of our comprehensive guarantee from 10 to 15 years.  At the time of launch we were the only resin bound paving supplier to offer such an extensive guarantee, which was 5 years longer than the majority of our competitors.  Recently we have seen the competition attempt to imitate our actions to stay competitive so it seems that for many years to come SureSet will continue to the lead the market and the competition will continue to follow.

2011 was a good year for SureSet in terms of the launch of new products, the successfulness of the shows we exhibited at, the wealth of information we now have available and the appointment of new Installers and International Agents but of course one of the most important successes of the year is the thousands of metres of resin bound paving we have installed throughout the UK and abroad. The following images are glimpses of a handful of the projects SureSet were involved in during 2011.

Installation

Resin bound paving not only provides a beautiful and durable surface, but it is also fast to install, allowing projects of all scale and complexity to be completed in remarkably short timescales.

As with all projects, the key to a perfect finish lies in good planning and preparation and in the case of resin bound paving, care must be taken in preparing the base, ensuring it has the strength and load-bearing capability required for the surface.  The base, which could be a new or existing concrete or asphalt surface, will need to be laid on a prepared sub base.  Advice on the required materials and the specification for the base and sub base is available from our website http://www.sureset.co.uk/specifications.html.

The base should be laid level and whilst the top resin bound surface will accommodate any minor irregularities, there shouldn’t be any significant ‘cracks or undulations’.

The resin bound surface course will generally be at least 10mm thickness and so an edge restraint of some form will be required.  This could be traditional edgings or kerb units, with the sub base left below the top of the edge restraint ready for the paving to be laid.  If no edge restraint is specified, an edging strip may be used to provide a working edge for the surface. Similarly, access covers (such as manholes) will also need to be left proud of the base course layer.

The base is now ready for the resin bound paving surface.  The resin is a mix of two components and a hardening agent – the amount of which is determined by the required working time (which will be affected by the scale and complexity of the project).  The selected aggregate, or combination of aggregates, are then mixed with the resin – the precise mix depending on the required visual and performance characteristics of the surface.  SureSet provide a virtually limitless range of colours and textures to suit almost all project needs.

The material is then spread evenly with a lute and then hand floated to a compact and uniform level.  Quality resin bound paving systems will be suitable for use after 4-6 hours for pedestrian traffic and 12-16 hours for vehicular traffic.  Where possible, 24 hours would be ideal for a surface that will be heavily used, to ensure that it is fully cured.

The result is a beautiful and hard wearing surface which will give many years service and which requires virtually no maintenance.  Resistant to cracks, oil, UV-light and frost damage, the integrity of the resin bound surface will remain intact, preventing stones from becoming loose and weeds from growing through.

For larger areas, we have our own professional, skilled installation teams.  However for smaller areas we offer DIY kits which contain everything needed for smaller domestic projects.  Contact us directly for further information: 0800 135 7096, mail@sureset.co.uk.

Resin Bonded V Resin Bound

There are differing types of resin surfacing available. Confusion still surrounds the differences between two prominent resin based surfaces which are resin bonded and resin bound systems.

Resin Bonded

Resin bonded paving is a 2 layered scatter system where the resin is sprayed on to the ground and the aggregate is scattered on top. Benefits of this system are that it is quick and easy to apply, it is cheap compared to many other paving systems including resin bound and it can be trafficked in a couple of hours. This system however is prone to loose stone, as only one side of the aggregate particle is attached to the resin surface. It is a non-permeable system, which is not as durable as resin bound paving and the design life for this product is only 5-8 years.

Resin Bound

Resin Bound paving is a 1 layered system which involves the aggregate and resin being mixed together prior to installation. A bound system should use a polyurethane resin which allows the material to be more flexible. The aggregate and resin are laid as a one layer mat at a much thicker depth than the resin bonded surface. Resin bound paving is more expensive than a resin bonded system however it is smooth and hardwearing with no loose stone making it perfect for areas with heavy forms of traffic such as town centres and access roads. It is also a long lasting surface with a design life of around 20-25 years. It is also permeable making it ideal for SUDS requirements and for domestic projects because there is no need for planning permission. The system can be laid very quickly and once laid is a very low maintenance option.

We specialise in supplying and installing the highest quality systems however there are a number of companies out there that supply inferior resin bound paving options for a cheaper price. The cheaper systems are being used by some companies to cut costs & make installation easier. As a result of this less than the optimum amount of resin is being used which leads to a short-term and undesirable finish. SureSet only ever use the very best resin bound aggregate systems available. The next time you are considering your paving options don’t be uncertain, be 100% SureSet.

Resin Bound Paving – A Brief Introduction

Here at SureSet we thought it would be a good idea to give readers a brief introduction to our product before addressing some of the more technical and in-depth issues.

Although still a fairly young material, resin bound paving has proven in applications throughout the UK and abroad that it is suitable for projects of all sizes and that it offers a great deal of design flexibility making it suited to even the most complex schemes.

Leading manufacturers like ourselves supply resin bound paving in a huge range of colours and textures to complement or contrast with any style of commercial application, home or landscape. The system has been used on a host of applications, everything from standard driveways to complex shapes which incorporate intricate design patterns.

Offering a modern, long-lasting and extremely durable alternative to traditional paving systems, options range from natural gravel and crushed stone to marble and recycled glass, providing almost limitless options for designers and architects. In fact because of the way the material is installed, patterns and shapes can be clearly defined meaning the potential of resin bound paving is only constrained by the designer’s own imagination.

Our high quality resin bound paving provides a permeable surface which is fully compliant with the current Building Regulations. This means that planning permission, a key consideration for residential applications, is not required.

Installation is a quick process and SureSets skilled installers are able to lay up to 250m² in a day. Each SureSet paving surface will provide many years of high quality performance, providing a highly durable, UV stable surface which is resistant to frost, oil damage – ensuring that its appearance won’t fade or be compromised over time.  We are so proud of our service that we supply it with a comprehensive 15 year guarantee which is more than any other resin bound paving supplier in the UK.
