Running for a Cause: Jim Newton’s Marathon Journey for Lewy Body Society
This April sees the 44th London Marathon and one of those running, is SureSet’s very own Jim Newton. He will be lacing up his running shoes for the TCS London Marathon kicking off his journey towards completing The London Classics this year.
Jim has set his sights on completing The London Classics this year by completing the TCS London Marathon in April, the RideLondon 100-mile bike ride in May and the SwimSerpentine at Hyde Park in September. This ambitious goal not only proves to be a physical feat, but also a testament to Jim's commitment to making a difference as he is dedicating his efforts to support the Lewy Body Society.
The significance of Jim's cause runs deep within his family. His father, Michael Newton (Mike), former Managing Director and Co-founder of SureSet UK Ltd, was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2015, and later was diagnosed with Lewy Body Disease in 2021. Lewy Body dementia is the second most common cause of age-related dementia, affecting around 130,000 people in the UK and Jim is raising money for The Lewy Body Society to help raise awareness of the disease and raise funds for research, so that in future it can be more easily diagnosed and treated.
Mike Newton shared a professional journey with Chairman Peter Watts and former CEO Kevin Weston before venturing into the resin bound paving industry establishing SureSet. As managing Director, SureSet grew under Mikes leadership over 12 years before he replicated the SureSet business model in Australia in 2008, alongside his daughter Tori, and son’s Andy and Jim, prior to his retirement in 2014.
“Many people have not heard of this disease, we certainly hadn't, which has some similar traits to Alzheimer’s but also Parkinson’s and frequently individuals are tormented by confusion, hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia. Lewy Body has slowly and progressively reduced my Dad's independence, confidence, problem solving ability, speech, mobility and his swallowing capacity. To all those who know him, he is a fun loving, hardworking, kind, and witty person who loves his family, and he certainly does not deserve this cruel disease. Hopefully, a cure will be found for Lewy Body Dementia so that no-one ever must fear its onset.”
In honour of his father and the countless individuals battling this cruel disease, Jim is calling upon the generosity of others to contribute to his fundraising efforts. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference in supporting the vital work of the Lewy Body Society.
