Forecourt at Brooklands Museum, Weybridge

Background
In 1977 Weybridge Museum put on an exhibition called ‘Wings over Brooklands’ organised by Morag Barton with assistance from British Aerospace Weybridge, the Vintage Aircraft Flying Association and the Brooklands Society.  This exhibition showed the vital role Brooklands had played in the history of international motoring and aviation.  Following this success, Morag was able to establish a museum dedicated to the Brooklands history.

Formally opened in 1991 Brooklands Museum now occupies part of the original 1907 motor racing circuit, the first purpose-built racing circuit in the world and is operated by the independent Brooklands Museum Trust Ltd.

Situated in a town by the River Wey, the museum in Weybridge, Surrey is open daily displaying a wide range of motoring and aviation exhibits ranging from racing cars, motorcycles, and bicycles to vast military aircraft.

Job Brief/Planning
In October 2020 our Sales Team was contacted by Chris Smith, Transport Strategy Project Manager for Surrey County Council.  Planning for the new pedestrian forecourt in front of the Brooklands Museum they wanted to create an area with a build-up of 75mm of open textured asphalt concrete binder course over 100mm of type 2 or similar sub-base, allowing 18mm depth to remain for the resin bound surface.

The requirement was to provide a permeable pedestrian forecourt at the visitor entrance.  The total area to be installed was approximately 284m² and the idea was to use different complementary colours within the design of a curved pathway through area and ‘circuit’ logo.

Having researched on our website at previous project images using aluminium edging and logo details, Chris was confident that SureSet would be the ideal solution for the Museum.

For a project of this scale, a full supply and installation service is provided by SureSet’s installers along with a 21 year guarantee which gives the customer full reassurance from start to finish that they will have a fantastic surface teamed with great service from everyone at SureSet.

Process/Execution
To start the installation, SureSet sub-contractor and Approved Installer MJS Surfacing Ltd marked the area out to ensure the material could be laid to the correct depth across the forecourt then straight aluminium edging was laid to produce the sections required.  To create the circuit design in the paving, flexible aluminium edging was used and formed to shape on site by the skilled installers.  The metal edging gives a clean subtle line between colours and a crisp finish to a design or logo whilst also giving a stable edge to lay the paving up to.

Two blends of resin bound paving from our Natural Aggregate Range were finally chosen after reviewing different combinations.  6mm Pearl Jam and 6mm Chestnut give an effective contrast to each other and blend beautifully with the surrounding greenery and other natural materials.

The 2-part resin is mixed together and a separate catalyst is added to allow for full control over the curing period.  This is then added to the aggregates in a forced action paddle mixer before being transferred to the laying area.  Hand floats and a Hover Trowel were then used to smooth and compact the material.

SureSet worked closely with the museum to cause as little disruption to their opening times as possible during the project installation.  Mechanical installation methods were used to give the highest quality finish to the large areas.  This also enabled the team of 4 men to complete the whole project in 3 days as using a Hover Trowel is an efficient way to compact the material in a timely manner without compromising the permeability.  Traditional methods such as hand floating are still used around the edges and in intricate areas.  Once the resin bound paving has been compacted, it needs to be left to fully cure.  The area could be used for pedestrians after approximately 8 hours.

The large entrance and ramped area were laid using the 6mm Chestnut and the main area of the forecourt using the 6mm Pearl Jam (with Chestnut again being used for the circuit logo).  Resin bound paving is perfect for these types of applications as it creates a smooth and durable surface where there is no loose stone, ideal for pedestrians, wheelchairs and pushchairs.

In September, local businesses and council officials celebrated the completion of the Brooklands Accessibility project with an opening event.  Guests were able to walk the new cycle route from Weybridge Town Centre to Brooklands Museum and were then invited to enjoy the museum afterwards.  It was a great day in which our Commercial Director, Jim Newton, was lucky enough to attend representing SureSet.
