Clay Farm, Cambridge

Work began on the Clay Farm development of 2,300 new dwellings in 2010. The 270-acre site, about 4km south of the City of Cambridge, is due for completion in 2020.

Sustainability and community involvement is at the top of the agenda for this development; plans include a SuDS strategy based on a series of four ponds with infiltration and settling basins across the site.

Also included in the development, and managed by Future City, is the project Art and Play which aims to deliver a five-year plan combining community engagement, performing art and architectural installations.

Creatively...artists Simon and Tom Bloor worked with Cambridge Council to design art for pathways that lead to a series of creative interventions encouraging informal play and interaction with the surrounding environment.

Functionally...the pathways are an important link between the existing community and new residents; creating a feeling of unity and ownership.

Practically...as well as functional and creative, the pathways need to be permeable, sustainable, durable and low maintenance.

In 2014, in Sterling, Winter Frost, Charcoal and Norwegian Pearl, our Installation Team completed a seamless installation of 875m² of permeable resin bound paving; recreating the designs by Simon and Tom Bloor within the surface.

The designs incorporated within SureSet encourage natural play and the exploration of areas specifically created to learn about, and interact with the natural environment.

Our Natural Aggregate in Sterling, Winter Frost, Charcoal and Norwegian Pearl installed on this project blend seamlessly into the natural and new surroundings of this amazing sustainable development.
