What made you start SureSet?
I started SureSet, because I was getting a little bit fed up with being a small cog in a big wheel, but mainly because I was convinced that there was a market for a really good quality resin bound paving in a range of natural stone and gravel colours. However the real impetus was suddenly being made redundant, the best thing the boss ever did! It forced me to take the plunge and set up in business with various friends and colleagues.
Did you know there was a market for the product?
I knew that there was a market for a cheap resin/oil bound material with limited durability, because it already existed and the only way to be certain that there was a demand for a better quality product, was to set up in business and find out. The real shock for me, was finding out just how hard it was to actually find customers, so many people seem content to make do with buying on price, rather than value for money.
How do you feel about the way the company has developed over the years?
Although the first 10 years or so were hard work, we did succeed in building the company up to become the market leader in our field, so I feel very pleased with that. Progress however has been painfully slow since the recession hit us and I do hope that we will become even more successful in the next 10 years, as the construction industry picks up and we can start to expand our operation into new market areas.
Why do you think SureSet is such a successful company?
I think that there are several reasons for that; for a start, we have a great product, that customers love, but also we've built up a great team who are able to provide a superb level of service all the way from the quality of our research and development, right through to the care that we take to install the material on site. I feel that if you put the customer first, then success will always follow.
Where do see the company going in the future?
I hope that in the future, we will be able to extend the SureSet ethos into a variety of other market opportunities, both in the UK and overseas. Various new ideas are under development that should improve our range of products and provide our customers with even more exciting paving design options. It would be nice to think that in the coming years, SureSet will not only be familiar to landscape architects, but also become a household brand name, against which all others are measured!
