When the spring and summer arrives, and the sunshine finally makes an appearance, there’s no nicer place to relax than your garden or patio. If you’re lucky enough to have a lovely patio outside your house, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. Eating dinner on the patio, sipping a glass of wine in the evening, it’s like having a miniature vacation without even leaving your property.
But what if your patio needs a little bit of love? Some of us have the space, and have a patio with potential – but we need to dedicate a little time and effort into the area to make it worth spending time there, and maybe we need some help finding inspiration for patio decor ideas.
If that sounds like you, and you’re looking for some easy tips on how to decorate your patio – hopefully this blog post will be helpful. Here at SureSet we’ve seen thousands of patios, and we’ve also helped thousands of people redo their patio and make the most of their outdoor space. So we know a thing or two about patios and how to decorate them.
But… Before you do any decorating, make sure your patio is safe and functional as a space. You’ll want to ensure the floor is level (nobody wants a wonky table!), and you’ll want to check there are no puddling areas on the floor too.
Tip 1: Think about how you’ll be using your patio
The first step when decorating your patio, is understanding properly how you plan on using it. Do you want to sit with a cup of coffee in the morning on your own, or will you be hosting BBQs and get-togethers with lots of guests? Having a think about how many people will need seats, how much space you’ll need, etc – all helps when designing a space you can actually use.
Tip 2: The plants
Plants and trees make a patio look fresh and green, and bring the space to life. But think carefully about the kind of ‘green stuff’ you can commit to. For some people with busy lives and busy jobs, it may be better to opt for faux plants (that require no maintenance – but still give the same look). You can get some wonderful faux plants now, so the style of your patio doesn’t need to sacrificed. However… If you fancy yourself as a bit of a gardener with green fingers, then why not go the whole hog and have some planters put in around the edges of your patio, and make the plants a main feature of the space?
Tip 3: Plant pots
Plant pots can add huge amounts of character to a patio and outdoor space, so don’t just choose the first pots you find. Shop around and aim to pick plant pots that truly suit your personality and style. Often, if you choose the right plant pots, you can make the patio feel like an extension of your home, like an additional room.
Tip 4: Fencing
If your garden patio is surrounded by fencing, it can often feel like the fencing ruins the view or the outlook of the patio. A simple way to combat this, and inject a little personality, is to paint the fencing! You can play it safe with a green or blue (to compliment the normal garden colours) or you can go a little daring and do striped fencing or bright, bold colours. We also find pastels colours look great on fences too and add a modern vibe to a patio.
Tip 5: Choose the right lighting
If you plan on spending time outside during the evenings, then finding the perfect patio lighting is going to make a huge difference to how much you enjoy using the space. If you’re after a whimsical feel, why not opt for fairy lights or string lighting? If you want something a bit more rustic, then fire pits or fire lanterns can give off the perfect vibe.
Tip 6: Think about your furniture
Furniture will be the biggest purchase you make for your patio, and it’s probably going to be the most important thing too. Lots of people rush into buying garden furniture, often imagining something different to the reality. The key to choosing the right furniture is knowing how you plan on using the space. If you want to be eating in the patio frequently – then an outdoor sofa or deck chairs might not be the wisest choice (it’s really annoying to eat with your plate balanced on your knees). If you plan on relaxing and sipping wine – then a sofa might be a good choice for you!
Tip 7: Decorating on a budget
If you’re on a budget, look for second-hand bits online, that can transform your space. For example, Facebook Marketplace has some great bargains, and it’ll usually only show you people who are selling things local to you (so easy to pick up). A patio doesn’t have to break the bank, and it’s really easy to transform the space for very little money, whether through DIY projects, or budget outdoor decorations.
Tip 8: Don’t spend too long deliberating!
Finally, don’t spend too long deliberating over how and what to do. Just get on with it, so that when the sun finally comes out, you have a patio to enjoy it in. Most people when it comes to their garden don’t start thinking about it until summer is already here… and by that time you’ve already lost a month of outdoor enjoyment!
