Traditional drainage moves rainwater as quickly as possible to a watercourse or soakaway. This can lead to:
increased risk of flooding downstream
increased risk of sudden rises in water levels and flow rates in water courses
increased contamination with oil, organic matter and toxic metals, resulting in poor water quality in rivers and groundwater
reduced water infiltrating the ground, depleting ground water and reducing flows in watercourses in dry weather
greater numbers of lifeless and unattractive urban watercourses
The EA has initiated SUDS - Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems - in recognition of the need to manage run-off, and to create a more sustainable approach to drainage.

Many planning authorities will expect planning applications to demonstrate how a more sustainable approach to drainage is to be incorporated into development proposals. They may also use planning conditions to secure the implementation of SUDS, and some have issued Supplementary Planning Guidance on SUDS.
