Show Garden
Background
In 2008, Wendy Allen designed a garden for the Hampton Court Flower Show on behalf of The Samaritans. The garden, called “Breathing Space …. Thinking Place”, was in the show’s small garden category. The design brief called for the installation of SureSet not only on a pathway underneath a stainless steel arch, but also for the garden’s boundary walls. To achieve this, the SureSet material was laid onto Perspex panels edged with aluminium which were then fixed vertically.
Solution
3mm Clear Frost G1319/01 Urban Pathway Mix, a recycled glass material, was selected by Wendy, with a total of 18m² used on the garden. This material was chosen as the aggregate creates a tighter, cleaner looking finish for the panels. Wendy wanted to create a very calm and relaxing place and decided to go for a clear material that had speckles of green, blue and lavender glass within the mix, which caught the sunlight brilliantly in a tranquil way.
Result
Wendy was delighted with the garden, commenting that a great deal of interest had been received from visitors to the show. The soft planting really complemented the SureSet material with small splashes of colour from the flowers and calming grass. With a water feature and silver birch tree at the back, the garden had a real sense of depth, with viewers drawn in to calm, tranquil setting. The show’s judges obviously agreed, awarding the garden a prestigious Bronze medal.
