Community centre
Background
The overall theme of this project depicts the area's history and its long association with the sea, with an eye-catching walkway linking the community centre with an adjacent medical centre. The design incorporates images of fish together with 250 footprints taken from traces provided by users of the two centres.
Solution
Having worked with SureSet on previous projects, landscape and sculpture artist Pete Codling was confident that the wide range of materials and finishes would deliver the desired results and, as the surface is resin bound, there would be no problems with loose or crumbling surfaces.
Result
For the 'beach effect' background, Pete specified a gravel mix, with the fish and footprints being created from Atlantic Blue, Pacific Blue and Clear Frost recycled glass. The same 'beach effect' finish allows the theme to be extended to outside seating as well.
A major design feature within the community centre's reception area is based on Pete's interpretation of a slipway leading down to the sea and incorporates large boulders and small pebbles, graduated in size. SureSet's Silver Pearl mix, in sizes ranging from 3mm to 10mm was used for this and, in a separate exercise, the blue glass finish was used to create an impression of puddles around the site's tree bases.
Pete Codling said: “Having used SureSet products before, I was confident it would achieve excellent results for this project, achieving dramatic effects from the extensive range of raw materials. The fact it is a cold lay system also made it ideal for use on site whilst other activity continued. The final result is exactly as envisaged and matches the original concept perfectly”.
