Background
The highly creative yet extremely intricate design, developed for a new paving area at Pokesdown Children’s Centre for Bournemouth YMCA, provided a real design challenge. The new crèche area featured a series of cartoon-like, underwater creatures in vivid primary colours; architects Terence O’Rourke initially anticipating that mosaic tiles would have to be used to meet the accuracy required for such a complex scheme.
Solution
The SureSet paving solution fully met the architect’s requirements - accurately recreating the stunning look and vibrant colours of the design, as well as providing a low maintenance, highly durable and permeable paving surface, backed by a comprehensive 15 year guarantee.
To achieve the 20 different colours that were required, a number of mixes were used from the SureSet Spectrum® range (which features recycled colour-coated glass in virtually any RAL colour). Once on site, laser-cut formers were used to create the outline and detailing of the design, into which the SureSet resin bound paving was hand-trowelled to provide a precise, smooth finish. For the surrounding areas, a 3mm Sahara Gold aggregate was used, both to complement the vivid ‘cartoon’ colours and to give the appearance of sand against the surrounding water.
Result
Commenting on the finished project, Stephen Foster from installation company PW Reynolds said: “The staff at Bournemouth YMCA are thrilled with the overall look of the crèche garden area, and with the designs that were achieved with the SureSet surface. The quality of the project is absolutely fantastic, recreating incredibly closely the architect’s initial design concepts”.
